LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2009 – LG Electronics today unveiled 12 stylish new HDTV product lines – nine series of LCD models and three plasma series – with screens ranging from 19- to 60-inch class sizes. Each of these HDTVs blends a refined design with smart technologies to elevate and personalize the home theater experience. The entire line is being introduced this week at the 2009 International CES®, Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center.
Technological Innovation and Energy Savings
Many of LG’s HDTV series incorporate advanced technologies – such as LED Backlighting, TruMotion 240Hz and wireless capabilities. Four core technologies – AV Mode II (Cinema, Sport, Game), Invisible Speakers, Clear Voice II and Picture Wizard – further enhance the entertainment experience. (For more information, see separate releases.)
Two new series of “Broadband HDTVs” feature LG’s “NetCast™ Entertainment Access”. These plasma and LCD models offer Ethernet connectivity providing access to a wide variety of information and entertainment content directly from the Internet*. Through LG’s new alliances with Yahoo!®, Netflix and YouTube, consumers can enjoy even more content from the comfort of their home. Consumers can use the Yahoo! Widget Engine for access to up-to-the minute weather reports, stock quotes, Flickr® photos, and more. LG HDTVs will be the first to offer instant streaming from Netflix and will also enable access to the vast array of user-generated content on YouTube directly on the LH50 and PS80 series. (See separate release.)
Two wireless HDTV solutions (LHX and LH85 series) remove unsightly wires and allow for flexible and convenient TV installation options. LG’s new HDTVs also meet Energy Star 3.0 specifications and have additional energy saving features. With LG’s “Smart Energy Saving” package, which consists of features such as backlight control options and video mute and some series adding Intelligent Sensor, LG is paving the way toward energy saving while also allowing consumers to customize their viewing experience.

LG ELECTRONICS ELEVATES LCD HDTV PICTURE QUALITY
WITH ‘TRUMOTION 240HZ’ TECHNOLOGY
DOWNLOAD
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2009 – LG Electronics’ new “TruMotion 240Hz” technology delivers an exceptional, natural picture with vivid color and ultra-fast motion picture response times. With this new LCD HDTV technology, consumers are treated to a beautiful viewing experience that requires less picture processing and earns the new Energy Star® rating, all without sacrificing design.
LG’s 240Hz technology is featured on the LHX, LH90, and LH55 LCD HDTV models at the 2009 International CES® – Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center. (See separate release for additional product line information.)
Behind the Technology
LG starts with Super In Plane Switching (S-IPS) panel, which provides faster response times and maintains better color and contrast at off-axis viewing angles, yielding superior performance. S-IPS also provides a more vivid and clear motion picture and virtually eliminates color wash.
TruMotion 240Hz builds on the capability of S-IPS by using a unique scanning backlight technology to improve motion picture response time from 120Hz to 240Hz to virtually eliminate motion blur, even during the fastest moving scenes. Conventional systems use a double process of motion estimation-motion compensation (MEMC) to insert “pseudo” data into the image in order to increase response time. However, this can also add unwanted motion artifacts into the picture.
LG’s TruMotion 240Hz scanning backlight technology and S-IPS combine to produce one of the fastest response times on an LCD HDTV. Because TruMotion 240Hz uses less picture processing, resulting images are smoother and more natural, treating consumers’ eyes to a more satisfying overall viewing experience. TruMotion 240Hz delivers images that are crystal clear and move so naturally, consumers will feel as though the action is unfolding right in their living room.
Energy Savings
For consumers looking for HDTVs that also provide energy saving benefits, the TruMotion 240Hz functionality on the LHX, LH90 and LH55 achieve Energy Star 3.0 certification.
These three models also feature a range of options to reduce their HDTV energy output with features such as Intelligent Sensor, which automatically senses the ambient light in the room and adjusts color and brightness accordingly; ISFccc, which allows for further professional calibration of settings based on the room environment; and a new backlight control system, which uses local dimming to automatically reduce brightness levels (LHX and LH90 only).

January 7, 2009: LG ELECTRONICS UNVEILS ADVANCED LED BACKLIGHT
DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY FOR LCD HDTVs
DOWNLOAD
Wireless Slim LED LHX Model Honored with CES Innovations Award;
New Backlight Technology Delivers Astonishing Picture Quality
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2009 – LG Electronics today announced a large step forward in LCD HDTV picture quality with a series of technological advancements in “LED Backlighting” designed to enable a more robust picture without sacrificing performance. In short, LG’s LED innovations offer consumers advanced picture quality, smart energy savings and stylish design.
“Our advanced LED Backlight technology precisely controls the brightness of specific areas of the screen and coupled with our TruMotion 240Hz technology, creates an amazingly natural picture,” said Tim Alessi, director, product development, LG Electronics USA. “Our new LED models enhance our full line of stylish HDTVs and illustrate our leadership in the evolving LCD market.”
LG’s LED Backlight technology creates an astoundingly high dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 and incorporates TruMotion 240Hz technology for extraordinary moving picture quality that together provide a more satisfying viewing experience and clearer, more natural images. (See separate release on 240Hz technology).
Advanced Technology, Stylish Design
Model LHX, a 55-inch* wireless ultra-slim HDTV and 2009 “CES Innovations” award honoree, and LG’s LH90 series, both feature LED Backlighting for a superior picture with deeper blacks and vivid colors. (See separate release for more information on the LHX and LH90 models.)
The extraordinary slim silhouette of the LHX is made possible by a new, thin lens system that amplifies the light while increasing the backlight’s quality, underscoring LG’s design prowess and the benefits of LED Backlight technology.
Unlike other slim LEDs which use “edge” lighting, the new LED LCD HDTV series use a full array of LED Backlights which employ local dimming techniques for precise picture control, resulting in deeper black levels, wide color gamut and smoother motion.
Additionally, LG’s new TruMotion 240Hz technology virtually eliminates motion blur and reduces image smearing, for a crisper, more natural picture. The use of LG’s advanced Super IPS panels further helps eliminate motion blur, even during the fastest moving scenes. The combination of these innovative technologies allows for one of the lowest response times on an LCD TV. Consumers will also enjoy the Smart Energy Saving technology built into the TV.
LG’s new LED Backlight HDTV innovations are on display this week at the 2009 International CES® – Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center. The award-winning LHX HDTV is also featured in the Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase – Booth #72062 at the Sands.

New to the 2009 line, the Cinema Mode has been calibrated using ISFccc standards for a more natural, film-like appearance.
• Clear Voice II – Clear Voice technology automatically enhances dialogue when background sounds – such as those in an action sequence – swell. Enhancements made to the Clear Voice technology now allow users to customize their personal preferences based on their home environment through a 12-step adjustment process. This calibration process is based on distinct voice zoom levels and does not interfere with surrounding sounds, ensuring consumers don’t miss a single line of dialogue.
• Picture Wizard – LG’s newest core technology, Picture Wizard, enables easy self-calibration by providing on-screen reference points for key picture quality elements such as black level, color, tint, sharpness and backlight levels. Now, consumers have the ability to calibrate their LG HDTV with an easy-to-use calibration process allowing them to change picture settings without hiring an expert. This takes the guesswork out of picture adjustments and eliminates the need to purchase separate calibration tools.**
HDTV models featuring LG’s Core Technologies are on display at the 2009 International CES® – Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center. (See separate release for additional product line information.)

January 5, 2009: LG ELECTRONICS FIRST TO UNVEIL ‘BROADBAND HDTVs’
THAT INSTANTLY STREAM MOVIES FROM NETFLIX

Netflix Members Can Instantly Watch Movies Directly On New LG Plasma and LCD HDTVs
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. and LOS GATOS, Calif., Jan. 5, 2009 – LG Electronics today extended its groundbreaking partnership with Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), as the two companies announced the first broadband-enabled HDTVs with Netflix streaming software embedded directly in the TV, requiring no external device. LG’s new LCD and plasma “Broadband HDTVs” will display the growing library of movies, TV episodes and high-definition (HD) content that Netflix members can watch instantly directly on the TV with Ethernet connectivity.
Available this spring, the new LCD and plasma HDTVs will join the LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player, the first Blu-ray disc player to stream movies instantly from Netflix. These products – and five new models of Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems planned for 2009 – will offer consumers a variety of ways to enjoy more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes instantly from Netflix. Netflix members owning one or more of the devices pay as little as $8.99 per month for unlimited instant streaming and unlimited DVDs from a catalog of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.
LG Electronics and Netflix will demonstrate these broadband HDTVs this week at the 2009 CES®, Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center.
“Embedding the Netflix streaming software in the television is a natural progression of our partnership with Netflix and our innovative product line,” said LG Electronics USA President Teddy Hwang. “This is an LG industry-first, which provides another flexible option for consumers seeking to access exciting content directly through their HDTV.”
“LG Electronics was first to embrace Netflix as a streaming partner a year ago, and was first in 2008 to introduce a Blu-ray disc player that streams movies from Netflix,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. “So it’s fitting that LG is the first to introduce Netflix instant streaming directly to the TV with these next-generation HDTVs.”
Netflix began offering its instant streaming functionality on the PC in January 2007 and made the leap to the TV last year via Netflix ready devices such as the LG BD300 Blu-ray disc player. With today’s announcement, Netflix will be streaming, for the first time, directly to the TV with no external device required.
Instantly streaming content from Netflix to the LG HDTVs will rely on a broadband connection and Queue-based user interface. Netflix members will use the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on members’ TVs and available to watch instantly through the HDTV. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds. With the accompanying remote control, Netflix members will be able to browse and make selections right on the TV screen and also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they will have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream.
“The partnership between Netflix and LG Electronics continues to give consumers more and better options for home entertainment,” said Hastings.
